I am trying to ad category avatar in Admin. But each time I insert the url to the file, and then click on save there is no avater showing for the category. When I go back to admin to check, it has removed the url and placed a 0 there.

Please redownload the build and reupload adm-misc.php I do beleive this was a fixed issue

Have you reran the upgrade script?
Please run the last upgrade again and then try.

I'll run the upgrade again...I only down loaded the entire script a week ago for my new site, so I am sure I have all the upgraded files.. but will try.

Yeah because clearly the upgrade script has this query which changes the thumbnail from an integer to a varchar field so it will work with urls. Code: Content visible to verified customers only.
