Being unable to add a query to my knowledge is not going to crash a server so I would suspect alot more issues server side here.
When you get it back up in admin area make sure you set the debug option to DISPLAY ERRORS. Then you can try adding a category and you can post the exact error here for us to assist.

Working OK now, edited Main and then added new categories with just one problem, header does not show in Categories but OK in index.php

In your header in admin => edit header make all relative paths to images a full url and your problem will be resolved.

Well strange, the Hex value FFFF00 does not even exist in hardwired css, any ideas?

You members are highlighting ads you can edit pp-inc.php and change the .yellow class to the color you want.
