Unhappy Strange by design

I reported some problems earlier with getting certain categories to work properly. I had grouped my top level categories by geographic area. There are no ads in them but they are geographic locales (Europe, US, Australasia)

Within those categories, I wanted to place subcats that have ads of different types, Forsale, Wanted, Services, but I can't because for some odd reason, I need to choose a template type for the parent category (the one with no ads). Why does it need a type if it has no ads?

I understand that the siblings need to have the same type of ad type as each other and their parent, but is there some reason for this? Why can't a parent (with no ads in it) point to children with different template types?

Regards,

Matt

All Children under a Parent Category must be of the same template type. It does not matter on a parent whether a Parent cat that contains thumbs or not. The parent still needs to be set and all children under it set the same.

The reason is the cat list function and the way things are displayed. The move box the upload box etc are all coded to display children under parent etc so they all must be the same template type

With the 1.8 release, this should no longer be the case. The first release did this simply because I did not anticipate that people would mix types, so I accounted for that in the upgrade.

Thanks for the response folks. This constraint was not obvious to me. I had all my categories working properly and then shuffled them around into a non-functioning architecture.

but it appears that this constraint IS still the case at 1.8c??? Does 1.8 come after 1.8c ???

Regards,

Matt

1.8c is the current version; I'll have to do some testing to see if I can replicate the problem.

Thanks Michael,

If you'd like, I sent omegatron my login info. It's very easy to duplicate if you simply change the ad type any of the empty parent categories I have at top level, then their children can't be posted to.

Regards,

Matt
