Image upload not possible under safe mode

Hi

We have our forum running in safe mode.
The attachment upload from vbulletin works fine but I can't upload images to my vbgallery

the only error message I get is

Keine Angabe: Bild
Wenn du einem normalen, gültigen Link im Forum gefolgt bist, wende dich bitte an den Webmaster.

No Information: Image
If you followed a valid Link in this forum, please contact the webmaster

I have the german language installed, so the english error message is translated.

There are no other error messages, neither in the source code nor in our apache log

The folder is CHMOD 777 and the path is correct

In vbgallery admin under the maintenance tab you can change the file storage method to safe mode and you should be allowed to upload.
