You can try upgrading all files and reinstalling templates there should not be any issues with avatars. if you do please post information to assist like url to gallery and what your missing image path to avatar is what the real path is etc.

My fault, I wasn´t precise enough with investigating.
I uploaded all files again and re-initialized the templates with no effect.
Then I found out, why only one user is showing up with the avatar. This user has an avatar from our regular avatar-database, not a customized one.
So the gallery-soft obviously can´t find the path to the customized avatar-uploads.

-- Edit ---
Meanwhile I found this thread
Custom Avatars not loading
and according to it I checked my customavatar-path-settings, which were correct.
But the custom-avatars in our forum are stored within the database itself. Maybe I should move them to the file-system (according to the ACP-option) to let the gallery find them finally?

I have to answer myself.
I performed a movement of the userpics from the database to the file-system and now the custom-avatars are showing up in the gallery!

Thank you for your support, it gave me the kick to look further.
It remains interesting for me anyhow, wether the gallery should be able to find custom-avatars, which are stored in the database, or not. Photopost itself has no probs to grab the custom-avatars from the database.
