show only top category

Is there a way to only show top level category? Showing sub categorys will fill up the index page to much. For example

Dog photos
-Minpin (do not want shown until user clicks on dog photos)
-Golden (do not want shown until user clicks on dog photos)
-Black lab (do not want shown until user clicks on dog photos)
Cat photos
-etc (do not want shown until user clicks on cat photos)
-etc (do not want shown until user clicks on cat photos)

You can in index options in admin set your category depth to 0
