Images on seperate server using thttpd?

I was reading on vBulletin.com that putting the images on a seperate server that uses thttpd instead of apache can improve performance drastically, and this is what is done on most of the heavily trafficked boards. I read that the way vBaGallery is coded now requires you to keep the images on the same server. Is there a way to overcome this restriction to allow for a seperate image server running just thttpd? If not, is it planned to allow for this in the near future? Requiring that the images be on the same server is going to make it impossible for a gallery site to scale to any decent size and traffic. Thanks for the consideration.

Currently that is not an option. There are several sites with thousands of images (check http://trackpads.com - 250,000 images) that have had no problems at all though.

Thanks for the response. 250,000 is certainly respectable, but I anticipate the site I am developing growing to millions of photos with several hundred thousand users. I can see that the limitation of only being able to use one server for the Gallery is going to be a major problem.
