How can I get the images that have been uploaded to show as a thumbnail by the navbar/random images/etc instead of the default 'island palm tree' thumbnail image?

What do you mean please provide an example I do not know what island palm tree means.
You upload an image a thumbnail is created. You can post a url to your site so we can try and understand what you mean.

Under random images it does turn the actual image into a thumbnail. Just uses the default 'island' picture.

Have you verified that you have the proper image processor for your server selected under upload options?
It looks to me like there is no image processing going on there.
For instance only Imagemagick does bitmap files. GD2 does not process bmp files. Try uploading a jpg image and see what happens. If you only have GD2 on your server then you can remove bmp as an acceptible image type under filetypes so you can not upload that type of file.

Okay that seemed to have fixed it, It was set as GD2. Switched it to Imagemagick and uploaded a jpg and it shows up perfectly. Thanks!
