Set your catdepth to show to 1 or 2 in index options in admin depending on how far you are looking to drill down and show.

Have you turned off use category cache in global options? Have you set another cat depth for those categories in edit categories in admin?

Yes, category cache is off.

I don't see how to set cat depth. I've put those categories under her parents, if that's what you mean.

I would have to see how you have it set honestly because I have gone through everything I know. You would need to send a url and admin login through the contact us link in our header.

Parent categories with the option to contain products activated doesn't shows as parent.
This is not documented. And I think is an undesirable behavior.

If you elect that a category contains images then it would correctly be listed as you had it set but yes if you want a category to be a separator then contains thumbs would be no. I misunderstood thought you where saying that your newly created subcat was not showing.
