View Full Version : BEST approach to upgrading and UPDATING a custom theme??
April 1st, 2013, 12:18 PM
I have a fully custom (front end) theme in which was made for me back a 2 years back for all 3 software.
PhotoPost Classifieds v4.02
I repaid for another year license to upgrade all 3 to the newest..
The problem is that I have hired 2 people to do the upgrade and Update of the themes and no one seems to know what they are doing!
What is the BEST approach to doing this? I need the themes to be updated with all the changes done to the front end.
I basically had the current version online in one URL and the fresh brand new installed highest version in another URL.
I said it would probably be easier to update the older (custom) version and then use the other URL with the fresh new version as a comparison and apply. But none of them are being able to do this.. Is this the wrong approach?
All 3 software are being used for the databases have content in them..
How are all you others doing this? Not everyone is using the default themes..
Does anyone have any SUGGESTED COMPANIES that you could PM ME that have worked for you in the past and did the job successfully?? Thanks!
PERFECT EXAMPLE: Here is the CURRENT programmer working on the Reviews.. Main Index - Welcome to the Camarosource.ca Camaro / Product Reviews (http://www.camarosource.ca/reviews/index.php) as you can see he clearly does not know what to do.. The images are now all corrupt (he has a backup of the images as do I) but nothing but function errors..

Well the only thing you where doing is loading in the header as well a secondary stylesheet with some styles classes and you where loading a special wrapper around each template in the beginning and end with some style classes.
I told you how much are upgrades services are for the products it is listed on our order page. We do custom work I could probally do it but we do things on an hourly basis the hard part really with the scope of your project would be to come up with an estimate of how long it would take to come up with a custom template set for all 3 products. That would take a little bit of time I would think if I remember your doing things where the title in each template needs to be in your css div tags.

How much do you charge per hour? Thanks

we charge 70/hr which is about half the industry standard for custom coding.

If you can do implement the changes to all 3 for $350. I would like to hire you :-)

In comparing the current version ReviewPost 6.03 to my older 5.0 (with custom theme), I can't find a single thing different as far as FRONT END goes??? I literally went link by link and can't find a single word, phrase or change?? From 5.0 to 6.03 was there absolutely NO front end changes? No variable implementations? No word corrections? SOMETHING to show this programmer is doing anything?
He's being paid $109ea each program but if there is nothing on the front end to change, (least I can't find anything) then obviously I don't need to pay someone to do something that doesn't need doing :-)

I can not say what your programmer is looking at but he is looking something wrong.
There are 5.1 5.2 releases where templates where changed. Bulks of changes would be in the front end files meaning PHP files not templates but look at the 6.0 release and there have even been changes to templates etc in 6.01 602 and 6.03
The files from 5.0 to 6.03 do not look the same not all the code is different that is correct but there are differences. The whole template structure of where things are liocated changed.
Your guy really does not know what he is doing if he thinks things are the same. Especially if all he is doing is breaking your stuff.
If all your doing is doing the changes I think your doing in wrapping that special div's around things I should be able to do it for that.

This is the ORIGINAL 5.0 (with custom theme) (before he touched it) [a backup]
Main Index - Welcome to the Camarosource.ca Camaro / Product Reviews (http://www.camarosource.ca/temporary/reviews/)
Here is the fresh new untouched 6.03: Main Index - My Product Gallery (http://www.camarosource.ca/reviews2/)
While the colors, and templates do look different, I don't actually see any real changes in new features, text, links on each page? I mean ignoring the IMAGES or COLORS of the 6.03 templates but the actual Text, Links, where they go.. Features on the front end templates that don't know in 5.0 because they didn't exist..
If I run page by page with Main Index - Welcome to the Camarosource.ca Camaro / Product Reviews (http://www.camarosource.ca/temporary/reviews/) and Main Index - My Product Gallery (http://www.camarosource.ca/reviews2/) I can't see anything different (not referring to the different color template).
PS. Is there a way to import the PARENT/CHILDREN and Products into the 6.03 to have an actual comparison because right now I have no products (fresh new install on 6.03) ?

There are indeed some template changes and bug fixes etc. No one has ever said there are tons of differences in that one product. The bulk of the changes are for new features in that product. There are some template changes so you will need to reskin your templates.
You can not just import in categories. No functionality to do that. The functionality here is you upgrade the site. When our program creates a category it also creates the corresponding data directories so everything works together through the scripting.
Not to beat a dead horse here but this discussion really has nothing to do with the product other than your guy is having issues skinning your stuff. If you are not happy with your developer guy feel free to send me an email through the contact us link. Kids are back in school tomorow from easter break so quite possibly I could find the time needed if support is not busy to skin all 3 products tomorow afternoon. For me its all about the time. I do not have much of that here. ;)
Take note if I did your skinning I would probally use 6.1 which is due out very soon and there are tons of template changes just those few files alone. Your talking at least half the templates have some changes from your version.
