View Full Version : Feature Prices

When you edit an ad, the features highlight, bold and italic do not display the prices beside the checkboxes. If members want to upgrade their ad and choose to edit it, this can be an issue.

The prices have never been displayed there so technically not a bug. If they also want to renew the ad same thing no pricing is displayed but it would be on any payment page.

You don't see a problem with that? It isn't very user friendly if they have to tick the box and then see the price on the next page. Just like the upload page, the prices should be displayed since its a paid feature. Its pretty silly to show a paid feature but withhold the fact that its a paid feature until they use it. Is there a way for me to show it as its shown in the upload template without having to hardcode the prices in the edit template? (So I can change the prices and have them change across the board.)

I have it displaying prices. That should be fixed for everyone because that is missing and should be shown by default.

They can't change the "Want to be notified by email when users post replies?" when editing an ad? I know you can change the status from the drop menu but this is another user friendly feature that is missing from the edit page. If a user goes in to edit their ad they should be able to edit everything the set in the upload and they should see it the same way they saw it during the upload process. SMH

No I do not see an issue with a feature being how it is coded. A bug is something wrong with the code and keeps it performing how it was intended. If 100000 customers each expected something to operate the way they wanted you would have 100000 different ideas. It is a nice suggestion for a future version for us to consider that is how I take that idea.
I add in tons of features users want so its no big deal.
Now as far as notification same thing not everything in life is changeable on the edit screen nor should it be. For instance a user can not change his duration of the ad. Now a user can change his notification status from yes to no very easily and you have overlooked this. When viewing the ad under the product options you can elect to receive replies or not.

I didn't overlook that option Chuck. This is what I wrote:
I know you can change the status from the drop menu but this is another user friendly feature that is missing from the edit page.
I own several websites that run many different scripts, each with admin controls. Yours is the ONLY one that has basic functionality missing from the edit screen. We could go back and forth on this but it comes down to usability. I am not asking for a new feature here. I am asking to have the current features displayed properly. When I click "edit", I expect to be able to edit EVERYTHING I entered in the upload screen MINUS the duration since that is handled on renewals. I honestly thought that was a bug because I couldn't fathom someone intentionally leaving out such a key component as a paid feature from the edit screen. That is basic usability. I went ahead and fixed my version to show the prices on that screen because they should be there. Just based on usability and functionality it should be shown and we shouldn't even be discussing it. You are acting like I am asking for a new feature or something. I simply couldn't understand how you could show the highlight, bold and italic features but completely neglect to show the pricing. That literally makes no sense Chuck. The same is true for the email setting. If someone goes in and edits an ad and sees the email setting, they could change it as they should be able to. Its another usability feature. I don't suggest removing it from the drop menu, because that is a great spot for it too, but it most certainly should be on the edit page because it is a usability feature.
Fixing the highlight, bold and italics is very easy for anyone who wants to show it.
Open your editproduct.tmpl and search for:
<input class="primary textbox" type="checkbox" name="highlight" value="1" $highcheck />
Change it to:
<input class="primary textbox" type="checkbox" name="highlight" value="1" $highcheck /> (for an additional $$adhigh)
<input class="primary textbox" type="checkbox" name="bold" value="1" $boldcheck />
Change it to:
<input class="primary textbox" type="checkbox" name="bold" value="1" $boldcheck /> (for an additional $$adbold)
<input class="primary textbox" type="checkbox" name="italic" value="1" $italiccheck />
Change it to:
<input class="primary textbox" type="checkbox" name="italic" value="1" $italiccheck /> (for an additional $$adital)
Save and upload the edited template.
When I get time later I will figure out how to add the menu for the email feature and will post how to fix that as well.

Certain things are not editable for a reason. The notification links is very visble and for use by all not just the poster. There is no need to hide that on an edit screen. That would be extra code for now reason because the link still has to exist where it is as notification on an ad is not just for the poster. Certain things are coded for a reason the way they are. It does not mean everyone has to agree with it.
The point I am making is you can edit your code any way you wish and you may even post your edits for others to use. However this discussion does not belong in the support forums. It would belong in the code mod forums.

I will quote myself:
Its another usability feature. I don't suggest removing it from the drop menu, because that is a great spot for it too, but it most certainly should be on the edit page because it is a usability feature.
This isn't a matter of an opinion but actual usability. I don't know why you are trying to argue this. The fact that it isn't on the edit page is ridiculous. No one is saying it shouldn't be in the drop menu because its great there. It SHOULD be on the edit page for the OP to access when editing the ad though. The same was true for showing the cost of the enhancements. The goal is to make these scripts as user friendly as possible. Editable features should be on the edit page. That's why I thought this was a bug. What is the logic behind not showing the prices and surprising a member that it requires payment for that feature when they edit an ad? Why omit the option to change the email preferences from the edit page? What is the logic behind that? It doesn't benefit anyone to not have these items shown but it does benefit every user when they are there. I go back to the key word here, usability. I really am trying to understand the logic behind not having this stuff shown but simply can't wrap my head around it. Why would you want to leave out features that are directly related to the ad from the edit page?

Maybe I am not explaining myself enough.
I have no problem adding in prices of highlight etc on the edit page and in fact I already did that before you even responded with your little hack. You notice I have not brought that up again my discussion is focused on your notification idea.
I have merely said we can choose to disagree that is why there is a mod forum where users can modify code and share with others there ideas outside the normal parameters of the code and support. My post merely said you can discuss code mods outside the support forums which is where you are posting.
The reason the notification thing is in plain site so every user can use it which is the proper action. The only reason there is a notification thing on the upload page is so you can choose when posting whether to be notified or not when placing your ad. There is no need to place it on the edit page. That is why I used duration as an example so you would understand. Placing things in multiple places in the code is 1 confusing and 2 CODE BLOAT.
It is all about making things as efficient as possible. We do not define something multiple times and display it in multiple places. The script becomes slow unresponsive and bogged down.
As stated feel free to post any mods you do to your code where I noted. I am not saying you can not post your ideas. I am merely trying to get you to post them in the proper place. From a support perspective we are merely saying the notification link is in the proper place.
