View Full Version : upgrade issues
May 14th, 2012, 11:59 AM
After upgrading from 7.02 to 8.03 I had several issues. One was that I had a . on the corner of each table. I have seen a post on this already. Another was that all of my sidebar left stuff refused to work any more. and a third was that the java magnifier stopped working as well as the ability to see the larger photos. I have since rolled back but I am still having issues with the java magnifier and larger images. Both do not work any more.
Any advice on where to look. I have checked permissions.

Couple things. You would need to delete any old stylesheets from version 7 and upload just ones from version 8. You can then in Layout Options in admin choose a version 8 style.
Certain Options I beleive have been removed in PP8 I would need to investigate but that may be one of the ones that bit the dust.

Chuck, most of my customers want the magnifier and i think I mentioned the large photos also are no longer viewable. do you have any fix for the large photos not viewable or a way to reenable the magnifier? trying to decide if I want to upgrade or stay on 7.02.

I would have to see your site you can definately see here on this very site large images are viewable.
You can send a url and admin login through the contact us link in our header.

Astronomy Astrophotography Galaxy Nebula Astrophoto Gallery - Astrophotogallery (http://www.astrophotogallery.org) chuck. Large images are no longer viewable by clicking on the image.
Also if you have an insert statement I can use to reenable java magnifier, much appreciated.

In your admin options do you have the option option to show images in a popup set to yes?
I can not help you include options which are not included in the software no longer. That script was removed in version 8.

apparently chuck my web host restored the files but not the database from backup. So my I have my old look and feel back , but I dont have the option see large images or the magnifying glass. Do you have the Insert statement I can use to put it back in the database? that's what I need.

Gene I do not think you understand what I have said now twice so lets go over it again.
The zoom thing is definately removed that much is correct. Stuff like ecards was removed as well. The stuff very little customers might have used. The program has to come into the future and the most modern technologies included like mobile viewing and more robust css styleing etc.
You can view large images all you want like I said which is why I asked what you had done etc and asked to see things.
We run the software right on our site so you can definately see large images right

I have everything running like it was by creating my own insert statement to re insert the large popup and java zoom into pp_settings and they are options now. My concern Chuck is that the zoom is a feature I really like and many users on the site like it also. I seem to have photopost 8.0 database and 7.02 php files, but for now everything seems to be working fine. I am just concerned that you guys are going in a direction that takes away the features I like most. I could care less about ecards, I agree on that.
Does the 8 version support the large window popup and could you continue to support the zoom?
May 16th, 2012, 10:38 AM
Like I said we support large images fine. Our site which I showed you an example is running our latest code 8.03
As far as zoom I can not say it was removed in version 8 as well as some other not used much features. You could always mod in anything you want but the supported program must move forward with what the majority of customers want as far as features. You are only one who has said anything about zoom and 8 series has been out for awhile now.
I know there where conflicts trying to make zoom work in version 8 which probally led to its removal. Not all java plays well together.

ok so I think I can get the zoom to work since I am the only user you have using that. I am going to give it another try in a week or two after taking really good backups. I will let you know how it goes. In the past upgrades where easy. I have made some custom changes though.

Upgrades are easy if anything the documenation is alot more thorough so it should be even easier.
Basically your uploading all the files except config and install files and running the upgrade script as I posted above.
May 16th, 2012, 06:08 PM
that's pretty much what i did chuck, From past experience I know the routine. i honestly dont think i need to do anything but upload the files. I have already run the upgrade script against my database and in pp_settings the version shows 8.0

I can only speak from normal procedures unless provided a url with an issue that I can see so I can give a response so let me know. ;)
I can tell you I have done numerous installs and upgrades with no issue. We can continue discussion once we see where you are.

Chuck, contemplating the upgrade this weekend, is it possible to create a subdirectory and use a copy of the database to test out the upgrade on the same website. And is this within my license rights to do? i just want to see what it will look like and if it does not look like I expect I want to be able to work on the look and feel until I get it right.
May 24th, 2012, 11:42 AM
You can try that although you would need to make sure all server paths urls in config files and the pp_settings table are correct for the new location.
It is permissable with your license to have a test copy however it can not be web accessible which means you would need to lock it down via htaccess so no one else can reach it.
May 24th, 2012, 01:36 PM
well that was extremely easy, now i have a QA environment to work in, just like work.
May 24th, 2012, 02:21 PM
Yep it is ;)

Chuck the key was having a QA environment so i did not have to panic that my site was down. After creating the second database, editing pp_settings table and the config-inc file. I was up and running, Since i had run the upgrade before my database was already at 8.03 and all i had to do was copy the upgrade files minus the config-inc. So that got me back to where i was when I first upgraded. After I deleted all of stylesheets and uploaded just your styles and then edited my sidebar stuff in the admin panel I was back to where i was minus my favorite stylesheet metal. So i migrated everything to default which is close enough and its all working now.
A few side notes,
I dont like search on the sidebar , takes up an objectionable amount of room
I do like categories on the sidebar
I dont like that you have fewer styles to choose from. that you need to fix
overall though I am happy to have upgraded, I wish the facebook integation was more planely doable. do you have a doc on how too? Social media is the future you know.
May 24th, 2012, 05:36 PM
You can create whatever stylesheets you wish. Remember most all products come with one stylesheet. We released PhotoPost 8.x series with 6.
I understand you may not like some things however when we plan features for our software we have to consider the majority of features users want and they overall wanted an interface overhaul which is what we did in PP 8.
Not sure what you mean about facebook integration. There is a social icons bar in PP 8 which is shown when viewing a photo. You can share to facebook, twitter, digg, stumbleupon social sites or email a user content.

Chuck, I must have bad vision, I swear I cant see them. where are they?
May 25th, 2012, 07:28 AM
It would help if I had a link
806 - PhotoPost Photo Gallery (http://www.photopost.com/photopost/member-galleries/p5348-806.html)
That shows you where they should be. Maybe edit your stylesheet and the path to the image make it a full url?
May 25th, 2012, 04:40 PM
i see them there, is it only for new photos uploaded? perhaps thats the issues.
May 25th, 2012, 04:47 PM
well heck now they show up.
May 25th, 2012, 04:50 PM
No problem then I take it
