View Full Version : Category Caching Question
July 30th, 2011, 09:36 AM
I am working with a fresh install of PP-Classifieds on my medium sized vbulletin 4.1.3 forum. (3500 members and 260k posts). I am using a separate database to house my classifieds and have three main categories with each having three or four subcatetories. There are a total of 7 ads posted (Im still testing it and haven't opened it up to members yet).
What I am seeing is very sluggish performance when compared to the main forum which is running from the same DB-server, just with a separate db. Essentially, each click to access the classifieds takes between 6-8 seconds to execute and each click within the classifieds takes about the same amount of time.
Ive tried turning off the statistics and PALS. This helped a little, but not much. So I looked into category caching, and things got weird.
Caching is currently OFF. If I turn it on, ALL of my categories and ads vanish. Its like the cache is empty and I haven't been able to find where/how to rebuild it.

I really could not say without seeing your site
I have pretty much a test site setup with even more cats then yours and separate databases and it loads fine.
Main Index - PhotoPost Classifieds (http://www.reeftalk.com/classifieds/)
There can be many factors to consider. It could be something in your header footer that causes the slow down which isnt working right showing outside your forum or a plugin your using in vbulletin. Lots of factors really.

Thanks for the feedback, Chuck.
There are two separate issues here, once of which Ive made some headway on and one of which I have not.
1) The sluggish loading of the classifieds is due to the VB4 integration with my site. I can get very quick performance from your product if I disable integration. Obviously I'd like to figure out whats wrong so I can use my skins though. Im hoping you'll have some ideas on how I can help you help me.
2) The category caching issue where no ads or categories are displayed when caching is enabled bothers me. Something must be configured wrong or missing the proper permissions or something. Perhaps a misconfigured mysql table? Is there any way to force a rebuild of the cache? It gives me blue lines for each category, but they are blank and no ads display beneath them.
Oh...if you would like admin access to my site, I would be happy to PM you with details.

1. I would think it has to do with any vb mods hacks if your running or maybe a custom style? You would have to narrow it down a little. I run vb4 with classifieds and as you see have no speed issues.
2. you would most definately have to send a url and admin login as I can not comment on something I can not see.

Ok, how should I go about sending you this information since your PMs are turned off?

Well, Ive debugged the sluggish loading problem as far as I can and have localized it to the following line in pp-inc.php:
I've tried to get the contents of that variable but have been unable to do so.
Maybe that will help you a bit more.
One last question: If I disable vb integration to get around the loading problem, will my users have to login to pp_classifieds separately to get to the ads? Or will pp_classifieds read their session cookie from vb and let them in?

theader is your vb header so its your vb header thats causing the loading issue?
I would suspect come non standard code or hack in vb but thats just me
Your login should be integrated even not using the vb header since your reading the same cookie vb uses.
