View Full Version : Extend extra fields feature - call/display lists of extra fields submitted
January 7th, 2011, 02:04 PM
Suggestion comes from discussion in mod forum here http://www.photopost.com/forum/reviewpost-mod-discussions/144905-help-understanding-add-extra-fields-product-review-submission-page.html#post1282669
New extended feature would call up that new extra field per product id for display in templates such as show product page in a compiled bullet/ordered list with some admin end management/approval/reject/edit/del functionality for custom extra fields that are set to be called/displayed on show product page.
i.e. extra field1 name = site review url link
where end users added product reviews may include a url link to a specific review.
The extended functionality would be to be able to query and compile all fieldX names i.e. all field1 values and display it as a bulleted list on show product page. You'd end up with show product page, with product itself, user reviews + list of compiled site review urls (field1).
edit: You could even extend the feature so far as to spring to life a new product offering i.e. linkpost - site linking directory or reviewlinkpost - review linking directory hehe

I do not really know what your trying to convey here because we already show the extended extra fields on the product page.
Are you by change suggesting that we try and surpress display of empty results? That might be relatively easy.

I mean extend the way in which these extra fields are displayed. Right now you have extra fields displayed in each individual post listed on product page. Extend it so that extra fields can be compiled into a ordered/bullet list for separate display on the product page.
Let me use a mock up of your demo page, where site review urls in below screenshot are the extra field1 data values submitted by each user when they add a product review
So the ordered list of field1 values (site review urls) for product id are displayed above the actual individual post (reviews that users add).

The product extra fields are already displayed above reviews in the actual product display
I think you might be confused on what your doing. The product extra fields display EXACTLY where you have mocked up and the review extra fields display right with the reviews.
The point I have been making is each extra field type already is coded and displays in the proper places. You can edit your template and move around the list of extras to display somewhere else but they are already where you are saying.
You may be confused a little on produt extras versus review extras.

Oh yeah, i think i got the wrong definition, not product extra fields as bullet list, but review extra fields as bullet list is what I want to do. Problem is not understand the code to move things around, hence having suggestion for new feature for extended review extra fields placement options in admin side :)

well take note in your example product extras show there as they should.
review extras are shown on each specific posted review so not real sure what your trying to move where as they are in the proper spots. all the code is in the showproduct template.
I can not understand why anyone would want to move review extra fields off of each review as that does not make much sense.

not move but additional display, so when a user submits a review which has a site review url link (extra field), a compiled list of review urls can be listed on product page, so even if user's review is on page 10 of show product page, their site review url is listed on 1st page. Just makes finding each site review url link easier to view and access if it's all on first page.
would also be userful for vendor/retailer info if you had an extra review field for place of purchase of the product. When user submits where they purchased product from, it can be bulleted list and accessed and viewed from 1st page on show product page (a where to buy list as such) rather than having visitors having to flick through several pages of review posts.
guess there's other uses for this, i.e. pulling username list from product reviews submitted for display as a bullet list/drop down list in a sidebar/frame which displays only on that productid's show product page. The list could show usernames of all those that have posted a review for productid and in brackets the number of reviews the username has posted to date - probably caching these lists would be a good idea. This could be a way of encouraging users to post more reviews if they are showcased on each product review page.
of course this would only be useful if there was accompanying admin end features to manage these custom bullet lists for approving/reject/banning/pruning and also setting limits as to how many extra review field entries are displayed on each bullet list etc
edit: hmm more i think about the more ideas come to mind, i just added vB plugin for vbstopforumspam api database to reduce comment spammers on forums so guess if reviewpost is paired with vbstopforumspam would be protected and reduce comment spam urls being posted ?

Well personally reviews are much like comments on a post in a forum. The data in each one belongs to each one. It would be extremely hard to do something like you what you explain if I am following. The data for that review must be displayed in that actual review. The overhead to separate things out different places would be alot. I do not think thats something that would fit into the normal operation of the program if your looking to separate out review data outside of the actual review and place elsewhere. that would add alot of overhead and queries to the app and not be a good thing.
