A user on my site is getting the error below when he uploads a picture and there is no thumbnail. Wondering what could cause this?
Warning: copy(/home/dm1817/public_html/gallery/data/500/thumbs/IMG_4317.jpg): failed to open stream: Permission denied in /home/dm1817/public_html/gallery/image-inc.php on line 314

First thing to check is that your uploads and data directories are set to 777 permissions every level beneath those directories. You need to ftp into your server and CHMOD the directories noted at every level down.

The admin and mods can post with no problems. I will check the permissions.
update: Everything is set to 777

I have just tested uploading a file and it works fine for me, but not for a registered user on my site

If permissions are correct on every uploads and data directory it should work for every user who has permission to upload.

The user can upload, it's creating the thumbnail that is giving me the error above. If we look at http://www.disneymagic.ca/gallery/showgallery.php?date=1201195389 we will notice "No thumbnail" but you can still click on the picture and view it.

My suggestion is to make sure the 500/thumbs directory under data is 777
Have you looked in the thumbs directory does the file exist and if so what are the permissions? they should be 666 or 644 on those files

500/thumbs was not at 777 it now is. I must of missed that!
there is an index.html file and it's set to 644

Yep just recheck your entire data folder and ensure they are all 777
