The other night my gallery underwent a serious loss of data. 20,000 images and their thumbnails were unexpectedly deleted from my gallery. How I do not know, however each and every DIR in the data folder was cleared. Having no tape backup myself and my team are crushed at this gigantic loss. How could such a thing occur? We use the latest software, nobody has access via SSH. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

What do you mean by deleted the data directory is just gone? The photos just gone but all cats still there?

Are the files still there but the mysql photos table entries gone or the mysql table says photos are there but the actual files deleted?

I need a bit more info to say more. If the mysql photos table is gone and the files are still on disk you can get things back if you have a mysql backup.

If the files are gone from the disk nothing you can do without a backup of that directory.

Basically someone with whichever type of access had to delete them.

files gone, DIR structure still intacked
as if it was cleared just for the reason of it being able to

they tried for the vBulletin first, when they couldnt get her they went for what could
*me rethinks 777 permissons

access was through a vB 3.03 security exploit in the forumdisplay file
no backups are available. I have desided to move to the invision software

That exploit was fixed over 9 months ago... I would think it would be hard to blame vBulletin for the problem. In that same amount of time Invision has had at least a half-dozen security updates.

Yikes! Sorry to hear about that. Unfortunately everybody is getting hit with these kinds of issues with their software.

hardly do I blame vBulletin, however the software as a whole is the M$ of bb systems. my site was targeted mearly becuase it was a vBulletin, the majority and popular.

vB 3.0.0 was released 1 year ago. Over the past year 6 of the 7 releases were security releases. And IPB has issued 5 security updates in the past 5 months.

And your point is? The point is that no matter what software you use, if your don't update it with the available security releases you are going to get hacked.

;) Your post sounded like you where taking up saying VB had no issues at all.

Just pointing out in the last 3 months there have been no less than 4 that I know for sure to plug holes.
