View Full Version : Grouping Photos

Is there a way to group photos other than categories?

For example I uploaded about 20 pictures yesterday from 1 event. They go in seperate categories on my site. But how can I group them all together so I can tell people, go here for all the pictures from this event?

Not without writing your own display script

How about creating an album?

Will that work??

Or should I say, how does that work?

Not if you want to place them in separate categories like your first post suggests.

If you want to place or show all photos from an event why not make an events category and a subcat name of the event and place the photos in one cat.

Or do as Michael suggested and create a personal album but either way the photos would need to be all in one cat or one album to display together

Ok here's the whole situation.

My site is on Native American Pow Wow Dancing. So I have categories like:

Men's Grass Dancing
Men's Fancy Feather Dancing
Women's Jingle Dancing

So when I upload photos from an event, I put them in the appropriate category. Dancers want to be able to look through a category of all Jingle photos.

But I'd then like to group the ones from 1 event together outside of that.

Does that make sense?

They can do a search and come up with Photos about Jingle etc.

The only way you could do something like this would be to use the upload to additional categories feature which involves doing what I stated above

Create a section for events and create a category for that even with a name whatever. Go to admin section and set allow to upload to additional categories and when uploading select the main cat you want the image in and pick secondary the event category.

There's no way for me to know what all the events will be that users want to group thier photos. There are hundreds of Pow Wow each year. So I can't create a category for each one.

Well users can create personal albums and stick all photos from an event in there.

Outside of the scenerio I layed about above using the additional cats function there is no way to have pictures all in different categories like you want and display an event with all Photos you want.

If you dont know where the photos are going to go how is the program to know? Do you follow me here. You would have to make some event categories and enable the additional cats feature so you can have photos where you want and have them displayed somewhere else too.

Your users can create an album for there event and use the additional cat chooser to also display them in your categories like you want yet have a album to show.

I've never turned on Albums. How do they work? Can you move photos into them? Are they in a category?

If you enable albums photos can be moved into them. Photopost can be copied using the duplicate cat feature etc.

Just remember the essential part however you do it based on what I have stated you need to use the duplicate cat feature if you are to also have the photos in your regular cats as well.

So its up to you whether you want to create an album or a category to house events. Albums can be assigned to categories but are not displayed like a category is. User assigned albums to categories are in a separate box with a link to that album under the category thumbs in a new table.

We might consider enabling an option to display albums with thumbnails inside of category views so that people see more of an album displayed versus a text link at the bottom.
