View Full Version : VB forum hack/suggestion
June 12th, 2004, 10:37 PM
We used to run our classifieds as a forum in vb. Our users were used to this and many bitch now that we've moved to PPclassifieds. Is there a way we could have a forum in vb that sort of echoed each post made to ppclassifieds? Wouldn't have to be fancy with pictures and all, just a simple text message with a link to the class ad.

I have posted requests for this hack all over vb.org as well. My users are pissed that we have moved our classifieds from our forums to ppclassifieds. We could probably make them happy if we could put a post in a vb3 forum for every classified that is put into pp classifeds.
Will pay for this hack.

http://www.photopostdev.com is where we have a development community. I'm not sure how to create auto-posts in vB3, but maybe someone would step up to the plate.

There is a hack released on vb.org by a user named Erwin that allows you to do things with a form outside of the forum system (like PM users, add to a thread, etc.)... I would imagine that if you looked at how the hack works you could take out the stuff needed to post into a thread from Photopost/Classifieds.
As for photopostdev.com being a community for hacks... it will never be such unless more time and care is devoted to it. It is fruitless to just throw it up there and expect growth... perhaps you might want to look at getting some moderators going there or something... furthermore, some guides to help "hackers" learn the photopost system would be helpful.

Drop me a PM and I'll be glad to add your name as a Moderator.

LOL... feel like everyone in line just took one step back and left you standing up front Regs? :D
June 19th, 2004, 09:39 AM
Pretty much :D
I'd gladly help out and will revisit this at the end of the summer if the "offer" is still there... I can't commit right now due to an impending wedding and all the apparent headaches that go with it :D
To be honest though, someone like myself isn't entirely what I had in mind since I know diddly about PHP... however I think Bryan Ex does :D
June 19th, 2004, 11:36 AM
Geez I thought Bryan was mod at the site.
I see his posts all over helping distressed souls out of logjams!
June 19th, 2004, 01:34 PM
Oh sure... there's a great idea. LMAO Let's have a moderator for a hack site that can't write an original line of code to save his life. If you can't dazzle them with brilliance... baffle them with BS I suppose.

Fooled me! I think you're underestimating your talents!
At least your charm provides consolation to fools in distress.

Just thinking out loud (er...in type?) here but... what about using the RSS News Feed hack on vb.org and having it draw from your classifieds instead of an external news source? At least that way half the coding is already done and it would be a matter of figuring out how to have the files produced in the correct format and available for import. What I don't know is how big of a job that would be to do as I haven't really looked into it myself but there's tons of sources for setting up that type of thing on the net.

Good idea. I wonder how hard it would be to get a RSS feed from the classifieds.
June 28th, 2004, 11:59 PM
Noooo idea.... but, I'll be doing a lot of research into news feeds later this month for a different project I want to try to pull together and will have a better idea then.
February 9th, 2005, 08:26 PM
Just wondering what if anything became of this great idea>
February 10th, 2005, 06:43 AM
half a year later, none...
the only thing that would push a coder from vBulletin to develop such a good idea would be to be paid, but a 10$ for the job is not enough (many people think that vB coders are freelancers doing this for fun!)...
creating a new thread for each new album created in photopost would be kinda useless, because there is a comment system on photopost that "in my opinion" do the job....
if all users complain about the new album, simply come back to the old way, there is nothing complicated...
February 10th, 2005, 08:05 AM
Actually I created his need many months back ;) as it was not hard to do
However while he wanted this I agree a double post with a link to the ad on classifieds I dont think is needed but thats the good thing about mods. You can code things to the way you want.
October 24th, 2005, 09:52 AM
Chuck, please can you post mod that will show ads as threads in Vb3?
October 24th, 2005, 10:11 AM
Sorry don't have time to do this anytime soon
I release freebies when I have time to play.

I had the same problem (users complaining) and removed PPC a few months ago. No I am ready to try again. The users suggest that new ads or comments should apear among new posts in the "New Posts" link - is it an easy way to do this?
November 11th, 2005, 07:26 AM
Chuck, how much would cost release of this? Without ads on forumhome, this hack is lost ...
November 11th, 2005, 09:26 AM
I've written a plug in for vb3.5 which does this, mirrors an advert to a specified forum (so it shows up in searches and New Posts), however when you go to view the thread, it automatically takes you to the actual PP classified :)
It won't remove ads from the forum when they expire, though I'm not too fused about that - I could look at packaging it up if there was a desire? (it has no config either, you have to edit variables...?)
November 11th, 2005, 09:41 AM
I am not sure what you mean by "edit viarables... etc", but can you port it? with some description what to edit?
Do you have also something that will show new ads in content box (like pictures from photopost) on forumhome? (this would be even better then ads in specific forum).
Thank you in advance !!!! if anything pls PMe .-)
November 11th, 2005, 09:47 AM
I'll look at making it a bit more user friendly :)
No at present I just have everything going into a hidden forum (but one that will still show up in the search) - like this:
Click any thread however and you will be taken directly to the classifieds.... this what you meant you wanted?
November 11th, 2005, 10:01 AM
Yes this is nice .-)
Second addition to promote classified would be to have recent ads box (one that shows up on your classified home - 4recent ads pictures) on the buttom of forumhome or elsewhere on forumhome.
I'll look at making it a bit more user friendly
If you give me list of variables (is it something like how to connect to database?...) with short description, hopefully I will be able to figure it out somehow .-)
THANKS A LOT!
November 11th, 2005, 10:07 AM
And I need to say that you have nice working forum .-)
November 12th, 2005, 01:10 AM
Cheers buddy :)
Well I have just gone through all the code and packaged it up as a vBulletin Product (so all you do is import it in, then set the options in the cp)
There are 2 PPC file edits required, however they are so easy - don't worry!
There is one thing bugging me at the moment though, and that is the vB API doesn't seem to index the post (so a search won't show it, though "New Posts" will) - though I hope to have this sorted by the end of the weekend - when i will post it up here
November 12th, 2005, 02:16 AM
Well that should be sorted :D
November 12th, 2005, 04:51 AM
I will install it as soon as possible and then release PPC on my forum!
Thank you very much!
