You can if you are using Imagemagick use the uniform thumbnail feature under upload options in admin. Otherwise a thumbnail is a smaller image of the same photo you upload. Therefore is the image is landscape or portrait the thumbnail is going to be landscape or portrait. That is unless your uploading square images which does not happen. 
As far as any vb plugins you can under your vb plugin manager near the top of the featured photos plugin for photopost set in the following line random. You will see the options there for that plugin. Code: Content visible to verified customers only.

Sorry for not giving the URL, I thought you had access to that. MidwestGerman.com.
Unfortunately I'm using GD2 as that would have been to easy of a fix for the thumbnail sizes. Ideally I would like to make it so all images have the same width or height which ever way I decide to set it. That way it isn't stretching or compressing any of the images but it'll still allow them to be very close to the same size over all.
I was able to fix it so it'll show random images like I wanted.
