Yeah well no host takes weekly or daily backups of all servers but most good hosts have monthly backups at the very least.

I take daily and weekly mysql dumps via a cron script on my server and do bi weekly ftp dumps of my site to another backup server so I always have a copy of my site. Alot of people forget the basics about running a site so this is not uncommon. Usually after something like what just happened to you happens them people get religious about about site maintenance.
