HMM I will check the code to see what I see but off the top of my head the query on next prev images would be different than the actual setting your talking about which is a category display order which is a totally different script that you are referring. Your talking about a setting for browseimages.php versus the actual showimage.php or displayimage.php scripts which deal with one photo.
