I checked our download it is indeed 2.51 and the copyright says 2.5
The readme may be older than the code
To upgrade your vbgallery you need to upload the files in the upload portion of the download to your forums and gallery directories and run the vbgallery_install.php script and select upgrade.
I have done various upgrades I know this works.
