well how big are your actual thumbnails in reality?
Example the forum thumbnail block uses an 81 pixel x 105 pixel overlay image and loads in the background the actual thumbnail. It looks to me like your thumbnails are extremely little like 40 pixels.
For me to provide support you need to place a url so I can see your forum and classifieds but I would suspect your actually creating these little thumbs.
