Like I said your option is to turn off the view cache thats all I can suggest since we are talking a server error here not script. mysql has gone away comes from the server shutting down the process. Most likely since the query itself is designed to take place in low priority times after all other tasks your mysql socket is timing out the process.

You can choose to display errors instead of email errors in debug option in global options.
