Import Failure Due to Thumbnail Creation

I've fought this most of the day and I can not figure it out.
I'm running the importalbums PHP script. It brings in the pictures just fine but fails to make the thumbnails. It says to check permissions but there's nothing wrong. Everything there is 777. The files are created with 644 (just like a normal upload into the gallery by a user) and it's not an issue.

Seen below, you can see the file is created fine yet the thumbnail fails. it 0kb in size. On the gallery side, if you click the thumbnails (which are a red x) they do show you the proper fullsize picture. This is strictly failing on creating the thumbnails.
Code:

As part of my troubleshooting process, I have run the import and left the failed thumbs in place. I think chmod'd them to 777 and ran the import again (this is fine, the same GUID is chosen each time so you wont get dupes). This fails too.. Currently I'm all backed out and awaiting an idea or solution.

Does anyone have any ideas? I'm really ready to ween the users off the vbulletin profile albums.

thanks!
