Orphaned files happen when someone has been removed from the forum as in delete old users and they no longer exist so when you update info then those pics now become orphaned.
I really could not comment more without seeing actual links to images in both installs. You can restore the old images table to the new images table in your new server if you choose make sure you take database backups before playing around with such things though
