As I usually do, I over thought this issue. The solution is really quite simple and makes browsing images in vbGallery a much more pleasant experience.
In the ADV_GALLERY_SHOWIMAGE template.
Add the code in red.

It allows every aspect of vbgallery to act naturally except when a user decides to use the previous or next link at the top of the image.
