All of the permissions on the data directory are 777. I verified this again this morning, and in fact to be certain (since there's a couple hundred directories) I ran
chmod 777 * on the data directory. I then attemped a new upload, and as before, the image file was uploaded to the proper directory in uploads, but not copied to 500/thumbs so I got the same error as I reported in my original post.
Yes, I did run the upgrade, the one from 5.61/5.62 to 6.0 since we previously were running 5.62.
Interestingly enough, when I switch over to GD2, I get this error no matter if it's a gif or jpg formatted image:
(): Sorry, this image type is not supported yet.
Why that would be I'm not sure. Thanks for your continued help and patience.
