The select statement that's giving the error, as written, will be looking for the votes column in the comments table, the line 686 you refer to adds a votes column to the photos table, so either the query is wrong or the comments table is not being set up correctly.
No, I am not working off an outdated BETA, I am a new (unhappy) customer and the code was downloaded "fresh" from the members area.
