It wont play of you dont have the codec on your pc that the video is encoded with, Try installing divx that puts 99% of the most popular codecs onto your pc.
If i were the OP i would go with what youtube have done and convert everything to flash (.flv) and use a flash player then everyone can watch it without messing about with codecs
