Hello & I hope this helps.......
The problem started on the first day of the server switchover. Our admin. 420 noticed blacked out pics (bop) in our 'Recent Photos' (RP) section. 420 pm'd me and asked for me to delete the bop in the RP section. As I was doing this I'd noticed they were members whose pics I'd recently approved. When I was done deleting the bops from that section I'd figured it was as many as I'd just approved & attributed it to the switchover. The gallery seemed fine as I left the site @ 9:00am EST.
After napping I woke to a new pm from 420 asking me to clean up the RP section again as it only contained 4 bop again. First thing I did was go to the Admin Panel & noted no-one else had approved any pics & wondered how they got there. I went to the gallery to clean it up again and noticed the bops even belonged to people that hadn't been on-site in months.
The gallery is now askew. With no order to the damage. A departed friend whose gallery is depended on & looked into by thousands every day is decimated.
Another current friend/member madamecrash lost 1/2 of her 115 or so pics by day two of switchover.....then 50 hours later as noted in 420s post #1 here she'd lost all but 6 or 7, that'd be day 3/4 of switchover, last day right?
The reason for my concern & restoring these pics with their original URLs intact is that dozens/hundreds of threads will lose ALL images caught up in this 'bop' issue.
So the damage really runs deeper than the inconvenience of members having to restore pics they might/might not still have. Some threads will be meaningless w/o the images required for reference. Members grow journals for other patients needs will be erased if not restored 'intact'.
I've read of the possible fix you'd suggested to 420 & that sounds reasonable. I understand we have those files backed up. I'm hoping what I described isn't a virus but sort of feels like that to me as PaRaLyZeD-420 hasn't had an image posted to his gallery since June/July of this yr. & yet he's lost probably over 200 images.
Thanks for all your help and please contact me if you need any more info on what I've seen going on in our gallery.
