yes you can do this easily, if you look into the gallery directory on your server you will find inc_photopost.php. Configure this exactly as you would the featured photos block and it will give you a gallery listing on your home page exactly as you describe

[/edit]Sorry got to this thread from the front page and did not realise you were using vbgallery, the mod i just told you about is for photopost pro, It may be included in the vbgallery but as i have not had any dealings with that product i have no idea.
