Excellent - got it working! I made one little modification, as
removing the code from ADV_GALLERY messes up the sub-categories table, so I replaced 'adv_gallery_categorybit_main' exactly as suggested and just moved the 'subcats' closing </if> conditional to right before 'categorybits', like so:
