And your surmise is correct... the ones that were working were in your local machines cache as a JPG (or whatever) so they were correct but once the IE cached filled up any future 'right-mouse-save-as' files were trying to be stored as a BMP. It's a very weird IE issue that crops up sometimes with strange results.
If you have any problems with the hack, just let me know in that thread and I'll see what I can do.
